‘Mort pour la France’ [Died for France]

Description
This posthumous award for military merit commemorates the sacrifices of a ‘poilu’ named Joseph Alexandre Douarre, a member of the 5th Regiment of French Colonial Infantry during World War I. Douarre, a ‘brave soldier’, was awarded a bronze Croix de Guerre for his actions in January 1915, where he died of his ‘glorious wounds’, according to the handwritten text.
Five years between the action and the recognition is a reflection of the overwhelmed bureaucracy during wartime years. Approximately 1.4 million medals such as this were awarded to soldiers of France, the majority posthumously.
