This colorful pair of maps was created by William and Alexander Keith Johnston for publication in the 9th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica (1875-1889). Using data supplied by Charles Schott, the upper image shows the mean annual temperature across the United States, ranging from 36 (white) to 76 (red) degrees Fahrenheit. The lower map presents the mean annual rainfall, which varies from 8″/year (white) to 68″/year (dark blue).
