Description
Prominent geographic features are highlighted on this map of Maryland, which prominently features the Chesapeake Bay and its numerous feeder rivers, pictorial topography in the west, and a large cypress swamp in the east.
Elsewhere, a rapidly developing network of roads can be seen connecting towns and settlements in nearly every corner of the state, including west of Cumberland, which is detailed in a small inset in the center left. The District of Columbia is clearly delineated, with the nearby estate of Mt. Vernon also labeled – possibly a sign of respect for the late first President.
The map was published in Philadelphia in 1820 by Benjamin Warner and Matthew Carey, for inclusion in A General Atlas: Being a Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters…
