The WWII route of the 4th German Mountain Division.

This interesting and uncommon unit map traces the 5,970-kilometer march of the Enzian Division, a component of the Wehrmacht’s (German Army) 4th Mountain Division during World War II. Unit insignia can be seen in the upper corners. A handful of simple vignettes highlight notable events, memorable sights, and other elements of war.

The journey begins near Ebingen on March 15, 1941. Railways (denoted by hashed lines) then carried the division to the Balkan Campaign later that Spring. Various engagements there were followed by a long march across the Soviet Union as part of Operation Barbarossa and the Battle of the Caucasus. The final date appears to be April 28, 1943, near Novorossiysk. Dated July 1945 in the lower left, just a few months after the unit surrendered to Soviet forces near the Czech city of Olomouc.
