Description

The Marriott Corporation undertook a number of projects in the early 1970’s to branch into the tourism and restaurant industries. The largest of these was the idea to open a chain of theme parks to capitalize on America’s upcoming bicentennial; an event that would surely be celebrated by millions of Americans. After a number of setbacks and failed proposals across the United States, two parks opened within a few months of one another in 1976 – one in California and one in Illinois.

The latter is on display here, which shows the numerous rides and attractions available in the park’s first season. Three coasters, Willard’s Whizzer, Turn of the Century, and the Gulf Coaster, are depicted, along with the elaborate double decker Columbia Carousel, which remains one of the largest of its kind in operation in the world.
