Maps Showing the Territory Served With Electricity, Gas, and Street Railway Service [New Jersey]

Gas, electricity, and transportation services offered to the residents of New Jersey by the Public Service companies.

“The territory served by Public Service Companies reaches from the Hudson to the Delaware and in it live five out of every six New Jersey residents, while ninety percent of the State’s industries are located therein.” – front cover.

This informative little booklet was published in 1926 by the Public Service Companies of New Jersey – the umbrella firm under which subsidiaries provided electricity, natural gas, and rail transportation (mostly streetcars) for much of the state. Three maps by the Matthews-Northup Works of Buffalo highlight the extent of operations.

The first shows the primary relevant infrastructure around Camden, New Jersey, including underwater cables. Unfolding the city plan presents a similar map of the area around Newark and Jersey City. The final centerfold image, titled Territory Served by the Operating Companies of Public Service Corporation of New Jersey, highlights in green the large region whose utilities are provided by the firm.
