Description

This interesting double-sided map highlights America’s 20th-century infatuation with celebrities and stardom. Portraits of many recognizable stars from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s can be seen in the vibrant blue bordering the simple street plan of Hollywood. The homes of over 200 individuals are pinpointed throughout the central image, which only covers about 12 square miles! Dozens more located outside the map area are listed along the bottom. Somewhat morbidly, the ‘yesterday’ referenced in the subtitle is quite literal; deceased celebrities are marked with an asterisk, including Marilyn Monroe, Nat King Cole, and Clark Gable.

The map was prepared and published by ESE California of La Habra. Undated, but likely issued between 1970 and 1974 – after the death of Robert Taylor (1969) and before Elvis and Priscilla’s divorce led to the sale of the Presley home at 1174 Hillcrest Road. Oddly, the same image is printed on both sides. Perhaps so that two people can use it at once?
