Description

Born in 1861 and died in 1947, Lieutenant General Robert Lee Bullard saw mind-boggling developments in military technology and strategy over the course of his lifetime. He served in the Spanish-American War and shortly thereafter was sent to the Philippines to quell the local revolution that would become known as the Philippine Insurrection.

There he led the 39th U.S. Volunteer Infantry, known colloquially as ‘Bullard’s Indians’ for their guerilla tactics in the field. This map shows the unit’s theater of operations across the island of Luzon, south of Manila. Roads and trails are noted throughout much of the image, but even the simple hachured topography gives some indication of the rugged terrain. The location of over two dozen different engagements are noted with small battle flags.

Traced by George Sipple and probably published around 1902. Prepared for the 39th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Association.
