This boldly designed map is the fifth edition (of over 30 in total) in the Dated Events series drawn by artist Stanley Turner and licensed by the publishing firm of C.C. Petersen. Based on the dates of events included (and excluded), it was likely issued in May or June of 1943.
One side is boldly colored and details the military bases, critical infrastructure and topography of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Text boxes in the negative space provide dates for specific events, while various shades of bright colors show the status of the ongoing campaigns across the hemisphere. A small inset of the world (lower right) highlights the massive territorial advantage enjoyed by the Allies (red).
The verso of the sheet is designed in a similar style, but is focused on the Pacific Theater and is entirely in black and white. It lists a litany of Japanese offenses in the region and notes a few instances where the Allies had been able to strike back. It omits the more ‘modern’ references found on the recto, such as the American conquest of Buna and recapture of Attu, indicating it’s a been reproduced from an earlier issue.
Includes the original envelope, which presents a map of Africa on its front and the original price – $.25. Such an inexpensive cost encourage the purchase of subsequent editions, leading the earlier versions to be quite scarce on the market today.
