Description
This impressive map of the United States shows the might and breadth of the country less than a decade after her entrance onto the world stage as a global imperial power. The acquisition of several of Spain’s overseas colonies, the Alaska Purchase, and the annexation of Hawaii, plus the 48 contiguous states and territories, comprise the extent of America’s territorial might.
The main image, issued at a scale of 82 miles to 1 inch, shows the United States the year prior to Oklahoma’s statehood and final incorporation of the Indian Territory. Railroads are boldly depicted and individually labeled, while topography is shown in simple hachure. A fascinating manuscript annotation in the left margin captures the wreck of the U.S.S. Macon, a rigid airship that went down in a storm off California’s coast in 1935.
A table of cities and population statistics is included on the right side of the sheet. A number of inset maps dated variously from the previous decade are included, ensuring all of the American Empire is represented within the borders.
