Description

The story of Swiss cheese in east-central Ohio has roots dating back to the 1850’s, when Swiss immigrants to the region, centered on the town of Sugarcreek, began establishing dairies and cheesemaking enterprises. The Ohio Swiss Association was organized in 1918 to help protect and standardize the market, and by the 1950’s Ohio Swiss cheese was being exported all over the world. Today, the state remains the largest producer in the United States.

This map, published in 1955, shows the ‘Swiss Cheese Center of Ohio’ and notes the location of over 30 different dairies and cheese companies. It was issued as the region began to embrace it’s Swiss heritage and identity – 2 years prior the first Ohio Swiss Festival had been held in Sugarcreek.
