Description
The successful launch of Sputnik I in October 1957 (the world’s first artificial satellite), followed by America’s own Explorer I in January 1958 kicked off the 20th-century Space Race. The public’s captivation with astronomy and celestial exploration was surging, and numerous publishers capitalized on contemporary interest by issuing informative works of varying degrees of accuracy. This charming example, lithographed by W.S. Konecky Associates, was published in 1960 by the New York-based Book Enterprises, Inc.
A simple overview of the solar system (interspersed with different nebulae and galaxies) takes up the majority of the sheet. Several comparative diagrams run along the bottom of the page, while scenes straight from a science fiction novel can be seen on the right. The upper border presents the ‘Zodiac Path of the Sun and the Planets.’
