Description

“In carrying out the guerrilla policy the Filipino army quickly disintegrated, but soon reappeared in small bands scattered all over the provinces occupied by the division. A corresponding dissemination of American troops immediately followed, the rapidity and extent of which may be seen by reference to the weekly station reports, copies of which are appended hereto, marked 6, from which it will be seen that the 33 stations occupied on December 1, 1899, had increased to 117 by April 6, 1900.” – General Arthur MacArthur, pg. 68.

This detailed lithographed map shows the situation of the U.S. Army’s 2nd Infantry Division on the Philippine Island of Luzon between May 31, 1899 to April 6, 1900. It presents a large region north of Manila, between the communities of Calumpit and Lingayen and shows topography in shaded color. Troop dispositions are noted according to the legend in the lower right, with additional annotations providing contextual information on dated unit movements, local engagements, and more.

The map was published by the Government Printing Office in 1900 to accompany Part 6 of the Report of the Lieutenant-General Commanding the Army, itself part of the annual report of the U.S. War Department. The volume contains over 600 pages of correspondence, tables of statistics, indices, and photographic plates. Of the last category, particularly interesting examples include images of insurgent trenches, an armored railcar (including Maxim gun), and natives fleeing to American lines with their meager possessions.
