Description

This interesting steel engraved map shows the entirety of the Mediterranean Sea between the Strait of Gibraltar and the shores of Syria, and includes a significant portion of Europe and North Africa within its borders. The technological marvels of the 19th century – the railroad, steamship, and telegraph – are emphasized throughout the image. Shipping routes are identified by nationality according to the legend in the upper left corner, which also notes the lines used for railways and both terrestrial and submarine telegraph lines.

The map was published in London by the firm of Cassel, Petter, & Galpin around 1860. The publisher’s headquarters were located at La Belle Sauvage, a historical public house and coaching inn that dated back to the 15th century. By the time John Cassell’s publishing house moved in (the early 1850’s), the building had become dilapidated and was torn down in 1873.
