Description

Chartered in 1834 to provide a daily ferry service between New York and Boston, the Long Island Rail Road Company has had a long and storied history on its development into the busiest commuter rail system in North America.

This map shows the system about halfway through its journey, in the early decades of the 20th century and shortly after the Pennsylvania Railroad bought a controlling interest. The company extended service into Manhattan to Pennsylvania Station (identified with an arrow on the map) in 1910. The legend identifies four primary tracks serving Long Island; standard and electric rails of the Long Island Railroad, the Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad and the Atlantic Avenue Railroad Company of Brooklyn.
