Description

The Liverpool Overhead Railway first opened for operation in 1893, and claims on the verso of this pamphlet advertise it as “the first overhead electric railway, not only in Europe, but in the world.” This was patently untrue, as the first elevated electric rail trials had taken place in Chicago over a decade prior.

But it was a massive engineering feat nonetheless, and the 13 mile route offered wonderful convenience for commuters and a spectacular view of the famous docks and the River Mersey for tourists. The line can be seen in red on this map, running parallel to the river between Seaforth and Dingle Stations. Prominent buildings and locations of interest are illustrated in profile.

The majority of illustrated buildings are related to the shipbuilding and transportation industry, highlighting the close relationship between Liverpool and maritime commerce.
