Description

This detailed map of the political organization of Israel was designed by Shapiro Graphic Publications and published in Tel-Aviv in 1983 by the Federation of Kibbutz Movements. It presents major transportation routes, international boundary lines, historic sites, and a variety of settlements; identified according to the legend in the center-left. Immediately above is an inset map of the southern portion of the country, comprised primarily of the Negev Desert.

The map was issued to highlight the distribution and incredible successes of the kibbutzim (singular: kibbutz) across Israel. These communal settlements, originally relying primarily on agricultural production, began in Palestine on land acquired by the Jewish National Fund in the first decade of the 20th century. The movement flourished in subsequent decades and an index of kibbutzim on the verso shows as many, if not more, than there are today. However, around the time of publication, Israel was experiencing an intense period of high inflation, wreaking havoc on the national economy, including the kibbutzim.
