Description
This interesting map of the Des Plaines River is one of fourteen sheets designed by members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for an early 20th-century Congressional report detailing the waterway between Chicago and the mouth of the Illinois River. As Number 13 in the set, the image captures the river between the Windy City and its sparsely populated western suburbs.
The Illinois and Michigan Sanitary and Ship Canals are prominently featured, along with railroads and survey points. A base contour map highlights the contrast between the relatively flat metropolitan area and the hillier outlying region.
