Description
This unassuming yet historic map of the California Gold Region was issued as part of one of the first narratives to spark “Gold Fever” in the hordes of prospectors heading west. The neatly detailed engraving outlines a burgeoning road network, with noted distances that reflect the distorted scale and speculative geography typical of the era. The Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers serve as a clear dividing line between the rugged foothills of the Sierra Nevada and the coastal bustle of the San Francisco Bay.
Within the foothills, early diggings are marked with small triangles, providing a census of the most promising sites in 1850. Ranches are pinpointed with small squares and accompanied by the foundational names of the Gold Rush era, including Sutter, Leidesdorff, and Sinclair. The map’s authority is bolstered by its attribution to Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Squadron, whose official surveys provided the raw data for the sheet. Originally included in Theodore Taylor Johnson’s influential work, Sights in the Gold Region, and Scenes by the Way (New York: Baker and Scribner, 1850), the map accompanied a gritty, unvarnished assessment of the West. Johnson’s narrative describes the grueling journey and the staggering cost of living in San Francisco, reminding readers that the “diggings” often yielded more heartbreak than fortune.
