Description
This intricate city map and accompanying guidebook to Brooklyn provide a fascinating snapshot of the New York borough at the height of the Great Depression. The black and white image showcases primary public transportation routes; subway, elevated, street cars, ferry lines, buses and railroads, and individually labels streets, parks, cemeteries and major local industries.
An inset in the lower right extends the image further east, nearly to JFK Airport. The individually numbered boxes within the map correspond to the street index on the verso, as noted in the lower left.
The “Red Book Information Guide,” in which the map was originally issued, is a 192 page pamphlet which includes a comprehensive street guide with further details and extensive lists of local places of interest.
