Description

Though questions regarding Taiwan’s political status have abounded since China first declared martial law there in 1949, in the latter half of the 20th century there is no doubt about the country’s tremendous economic growth. As one of the Four Asian Tigers, Taiwan experienced significant levels of industrialization, a ballooning GDP, and rapid development in a trend that started in the early 1960’s and continues largely to this day.

This map shows the results of roughly the first decade of this process, with railroads and highways under construction across the country. Air and water routes are also noted, and a significant number of tourist locations are identified in the accompanying legend (lower right). The aforementioned political turmoil is also alluded to, with varying levels of governmental structures labeled including direct control municipalities.

Edited by I-jen Chen and published in Taipei in 1968 by the Nan Hua Publishing Co. Ltd.
