Description

This informative chart of outer space provides a compact overview of our Solar System, from the Sun to the (former) 9th planet, Pluto. The diameter and length of time for each celestial body to rotate once is listed and several tables note difference in travel time and weight on each planet. Further summaries and factual data can be seen in the several paragraphs along the top and bottom of the image.

Despite all the helpful info contained within the image, wishful thinking and the futurism of the Space Race can also be seen. Space men with biotic limbs, planet explorers and huge space stations are all optimistically shown at a period when such scientific technology could only be dreamed of – Yuri Gagarin had been the first human to enter orbit just a few months prior to publication.

The map was designed by Rand McNally and this particular example was issued in the Sunday Comics section of the July 9, 1961 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
