Description
This charming tourist map of New Zealand was issued in Wellington by E.V. Paul, Government Printer. A rubber stamp in the lower right corner offers a date of July 14, 1938, while nearby is penciled “re: High Commissioner for N.Z., London.” The colorful image, aimed at the outdoor enthusiast, highlights the numerous leisure and recreational activities available shortly before the outbreak of war.
Diverse hunting, natural springs (both hot and cold), sanitaria (health resorts), and fishing are noted according to the legend in the upper left. It’s interesting to note that all the large mammals are invasive species. Numerous labels identify geographic features, landmarks, and sites for further action – even extreme sports like rock climbing and tobogganing. The Thermal Wonderland encompasses a large area north of Mt. Ruapehu and is home to geysers, mineral baths, and fumaroles.
