Description

This ephemeral pocket map offers a detailed overview of the New York boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn during the late 1920s. A somewhat confusing assortment of transit lines (BMT, IRT, Elevated, etc.) are noted according to the legend in the upper right. Steamship and ferry routes are also highlighted. Two dozen companies (mostly hotels), with advertisements on the verso, are pinpointed throughout each image, and the locations of the North German Lloyd piers and offices are emphasized.

The map was created in New York by the prominent firm of C.S. Hammond & Company (one of the promoters on the verso) and distributed by the successful transatlantic shipping firm, Norddeutscher Lloyd. Published around 1929, based on the completion of the Holland Tunnels (1927) and the absence of the Empire State Building (1931) or the Independent Subway Lines (1932).
