Description

This wonderfully detailed map of Nebraska and the territories of Wyoming, Dakota, and Montana clearly reflects the growth and settlement of the American West. In the south, the Oregon Trail is shown following the Platte River, near landmarks like Independence Rock and Fort Laramie.

Nearby, the recently completed Transcontinental Railroad follows a similar course and represents the next generation of regional development. The northern regions are absent of identified transportation routes, with a few scattered forts and trading posts along navigable rivers comprising the bulk of the interior settlement. Interesting annotations, such as gold near Jefferson City, add to the contemporary charm.

The map was published in 1875 by Charles Jones and Theodore Hamilton for inclusion in Historical Atlas Of The World Illustrated With 52 Maps.
