Description

This uncommon and ephemeral pocket map of Kane County, Illinois drawn by A.C. Quick and distributed compliments of Swan M. Bergquist, probably in the first few years of the 20th century. A relatively simple outline labels townships, sections, cities (notably Aurora and Elgin), post offices, and railways. Numerous contemporary advertisements on the paper covers and the verso of the map promote a fascinating variety of local businesses. These include Bergquist, a grocer, as well as undertakers, hardware stores, construction companies, and the Geneva Laundry.

The back cover presents a photograph of the Elgin Electric Sanitarium, with the somewhat disingenuous tagline “Chronic Diseases not responding to medicine or surgery are successfully treated by our methods, no matter what the cause or nature of your trouble. Our methods are always pleasant and agreeable.”

The map is rare and unlisted in WorldCat as of June 2024. Two earlier editions are noted, dated 1890 and 1894 on the cover, but even these appear in only one and two institutions, respectively. OCLC# 868985985 (1890 edition); OCLC# 1377289660 (1894 edition).
