Description
This wonderfully detailed map of Highland Park, Illinois was published in nearby Winnetka by the engineering firm of Windes & Marsh in 1922. The community situated 30 miles north of Chicago was incorporated with about 600 residents in 1869 with hopes of developing an affluent suburb for the city’s professional class. Purchase or consumption of alcohol was prohibited until 1900, and the city experienced a 98% increase in population during the 1920s.
The map reflects the beginnings of such an explosion in growth, showing subdivided plots concentrated heavily along the line of the Chicago, Milwaukee, & North Shore Railroad – one of the most iconic interurbans of the 20th century. The names of individual landowners occupy many of the larger parcels seen towards the east. Ravinia Park, a popular outdoor attraction founded in 1904, is labeled at the bottom of the page, near the ravines from which it gets its name.
Other locations of interest include country clubs such as Exmoor (1896), Bob O’Link (1916), and Northmore (1918), the Fort Sheridan Military Reservation, schools, churches, and the Hotel Moraine (1900). Numerous annotations scattered throughout the page identify real estate transactions, updated survey results, new infrastructure, and more.

Condition Description: Soft creasing and faint wear along old fold lines. About 3" of separation along the bottom center has been repaired on the verso with archival tape. An irregular 2" closed tear in the upper right has also been repaired. Light scattered soiling, consistent with age, concentrated in a small area in the upper left. Scattered manuscript annotations throughout in pencil and red ink. Good to very good overall.
