Description
This city plan and street map of Hagerstown, Maryland was originally published locally by the J.B. Ferguson & Company in 1936. Streets, lot numbers, large property owners, public buildings and other locations of interest are all individually labeled, and a comprehensive index to the city’s various additions has been provided in the lower right.
This particular copy of the map was customized extensively for use in the Central Engineering Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and has been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and convenient storage. Bright color has been applied by hand to denote property and track ownership throughout the city, and a custom legend was added next to the title to identify the four primary local operators; The Penn, Western Maryland, Baltimore & Ohio, and Norfolk & Western Railroads. Additional manuscript notations pinpoint areas of joint trackage, the freight station, passenger stations, and connecting destinations (including the nearby battlefield at Antietam).
