Description

“You’ll Find HAWKINS DAIRY MILK All Over Town” “More Power to You, El Paso” “More for your Money all the Time” “Save Time Two Ways”

Eye-catching advertisements abound on this magnificent 1950 street map of El Paso, Texas. An image bordered by 7-Up bottles contains promotional text for no fewer than forty different local companies, with dozens more found on the verso. A shamrock in the lower corner highlights the ‘Irishness’ of I.M. “Pat” Patrick’s Insurance Agency, while ‘The Southwest’s Greatest Department Store’ can be seen at the corners of Mesa and San Antonio Streets.

The map itself is eminently practical and identifies street names, points of interest, geographic features, and additional businesses. The campus of Texas Western University (UTEP) can be seen on the far left, having just been reorganized from the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy the year prior to publication.

According to text in the lower left, the map was apparently compiled by the local chapter of the Daughters of the Nile, a fraternal organization for the wives of Masonic members. Printed in El Paso by Guynes Printing Company.
