Description
This map was engraved by Thomas Bowen for inclusion in the December 1773 edition of Gentlemen’s Magazine. It shows the tracks made by Captain James Cook on his first voyage to the Pacific, as well as routes taken by other prominent explorers including Drake, Bougainville, and Byron.
Cook’s discoveries electrified the public and propelled him to the status of national hero, and this sheet is the first of three that were published in Gentleman’s Magazine celebrating his achievements. Part two, covering the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand was issued in a separate December supplement, while the third sheet (Africa and Europe) were printed in January of 1774.
