This 1946 map captures some of the final route changes of the Chicago Surface Lines, a local transportation company with a sprawling network of streetcar and bus lines – only a small fraction of which are captured within the image. Substitute, new, and proposed routes are indicated throughout the city, as noted in the legend located in the upper right corner. The year following the publication of the map, the Chicago Surface Lines was absorbed into the newly organized Chicago Transit Authority.
