Description

This map of Chicago shows the vast extent of the elevated lines under the operation of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company (CRT), just one year before it was acquired by the new Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The State Street Subway, completed in 1943 to avoid congestion in the Loop, is highlighted in red and an inset map of its route can be seen on the right side.

The ‘L’ lines were just one part of a much broader transportation network available to visitors and residents in the mid-20th century. Streetcars, trolley buses, motor coaches, and suburban services are all shown using a variety of colored lines, explained further in the legend in the lower left.

Published in Chicago in 1946 by Poole Brothers, Inc. on behalf of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company.
