Description
Chicago’s harbor (including the river) and its railroads were the city’s lifeblood during the 19th century. This interesting map by the Army Corps of Engineers (responsible for the maintenance of the vital waterways) shows relevant improvements and proposed updates for the fiscal year 1890/1891. Notable features of interest include a large proposed exterior breakwater, the (soon-to-be-destroyed) Interstate Exposition Building, extensive facilities of the Illinois Central Railroad, the lighthouse, and the pumping station (not labeled, but outlined).
