Description

This colorful map of California was lithographed in Buffalo around 1909 by the Matthews-Northrup Works on behalf of the Southern Pacific Railroad. According to text on the verso by Alexander McAdie,

“California is probably the most wonderful State in the Union with regard to temperature. The climate seeker can find the climate he desires, and, indeed, can find his choice of climates. The different shades of color shown on this map bring out not only mean temperature conditions, but the different kinds of climate which may be said to prevail in California.”

In addition to temperature data, the image shows the completed and proposed railroads of the Southern Pacific and its connecting lines, as well as other railways and even stage coach routes! An interesting inset in the center-right shows the comparative area of California is equitable to approximately nine eastern states. A second inset immediately below shows the lines of the Pacific Electric Railway throughout the Los Angeles region, while a third in the lower left shows similar information about San Francisco and the Bay Area.
