Description

This fascinating map of Brown County, Indiana was compiled by state geologist Edward Travers Cox for inclusion in his Sixth Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Indiana, published in Indianapolis in 1874.

The image offers an intriguing overview of the heavily forested and largely agrarian county in south-central Indiana. Topography is shown in hachure, highlighting a rugged terrain with numerous named ridges, bluffs, and hills. Several gold deposits are noted along Bean Blossom Creek.

Other local industries include a tannery, grist mill, stone quarry, fruit farm, and steam tannery – reflecting a diverse and resilient economy that prospered after the Civil War.
