Description

Situated just across the Straits of Annian, close to where Sir Frances Drake made landfall on the western coast of North America, lies the mythical land of Brobdingnag. It is one of several locations visited by Lemuel Gulliver during in Gulliver’s Travels, a satirical novel written by Jonathan Swift and first published in 1726.

Gulliver’s ship is blown off course “500 leagues east” of the Moluccas (which would put him nowhere near California) and he arrives on the shores of Brobdingnag – a land of giants. Inhabitants “as tall as church steeples” are accompanied by animals and plants that are also proportional in size. The map reflects the geography of the territory as described in the book, and includes the capital (Lorbrulgrud) and the king’s palace at Flanflasnic.
