Description

This map of Altoona, Pennsylvania was designed by city engineer H.J. Baum and published in 1939. It shows the city organized by wards and individually labels streets, schools, parks, cemeteries and reservoirs.

Altoona was established in 1849 by the Pennsylvania Railroad as the site for a massive shop and maintenance complex, so it’s perhaps fitting that this particular example of the map was customized for use by the railroad’s engineering department.

Stamped “C.E. System” (Central Engineering), the map was dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and ease of storage. Manuscript additions in bright red ink identify the tracks and property occupied by the Pennsylvania Railroad – huge swathes of land within the city limits. Additional annotations in black ink identify the freight station and passenger station.
