Description

Peter Max is a German-born American artist who rose to fame in the 1960s for his vibrant, psychedelic style blending pop art, cosmic imagery, and bold color. He became widely known for his various moon landing posters in 1969, capturing the Apollo 11 mission with his signature colorful, celebratory, and whimsical approach. Max’s work epitomized the era’s countercultural optimism, cosmic fascination, and commercial pop sensibilities, appearing on posters, album covers, and advertising campaigns.

This is the third print related to the moon landing, with an abstract silhouette transposed over a negative image of the lunar surface. From the Peter Max studio website: This stunning vintage poster, created at the height of Peter Max’s ‘Cosmic Art’ period, expresses Max’s uplifting interpretation of pop art, addressing the love-and-peace movement and the hope, optimism and achievement of the space age.

With his powerful and otherworldly color, intricate line work, color blends created with split fountains on press and use of collage elements, Max commemorated the stellar achievements in imagination and technology that landed humans on the moon.

Max’s fascination with space exploration continued through the decades and he later invited Apollo II astronaut Buzz Aldrin to his studio. They formed a friendship over their shared connection and love of our galaxy. This striking, vintage poster takes us to that unforgettable moment in human history when man first stepped onto the moon, reimagined by Peter Max in glorious color and composition.
