Description
This bright red line traces the route of the 23rd Armored Engineer Battalion across Europe between its arrival in France on June 23, 1944, and the final push into Germany the following April. Much of the advance was during combat operations with the 3rd Armored Division, highlighted in yellow and representing a majority of the campaign. Brief dated captions offer relevant tidbits of information along the way that serve as a catalog of accomplishments. These reflect ‘normal’ engineering duties of constructing bridges, laying and removing minefields, and the removal of roadblocks, in addition to several instances of fighting in which the unit was engaged as infantry. Two of the most notable actions are shown in insets in the lower right – the Battle of the Bulge and the assault on the Siegfried Line.
The map was prepared and reproduced by the 654th Engineer Battalion in May, 1945. It is uncommon on the market (this is the first example I’ve handled) and listed only once in WorldCat as of June 2024, at the Donovan Research Library. OCLC# 1244825359.
