Major Operations of the 1106th Engineer Combat Group from 6 June 1944 to 31 Oct. 1944

This uncommon WWII unit history was drawn by Staff Sergeant Albert Totten and published, probably in Germany, in late 1944 by the 663rd Engineer Company. The image captures the advance and major operations of the 1106th Engineer Combat Group across the European Theater of Operations from D-Day (June 6th) to Halloween (Oct 31st).

During the advance, the combat group consisted of various personnel elements and subordinate units listed below the map. The 1106th was assigned to the VII Corps of the United States Army and supported numerous well-known divisions; including the 1st Infantry, 82nd Airborne, and 2nd Armored. Notable actions described via text include the assault on Utah Beach, the construction of numerous bridges, and the deployment of a ‘secret weapon’ – the V-13 (a train car filled with explosives) – near Aachen.

The map is rare (this is the first example I have handled) and listed only once in WorldCat as of November 2024, at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center.
