Description

This almost illegible plan of Chicago divides the city north and south of 32nd street; each side presenting a similar, albeit confusing, mix of street names, numbers, and transportation routes (nearly 100 different streetcar lines in operation!) A variety of accompanying legends and explanatory text is necessary to define the contents.

Perhaps the inexperience of the cartographer, William Godsoe MacFarlane, is to blame. Born in Canada in 1870, he became well-known as a printer of postcards and viewbooks in the early 20th century. He moved to Chicago around 1911 and continued his publishing career; partnering with a number of firms and branching out into a variety of media, including maps.
