Description

This idyllic Gilded-Age view of Long Branch, New Jersey was based on an illustration by Theodore Davis and originally published in an 1873 issue of Harper’s Weekly. It presents the seaside resort town about a century after it first became popular among residents of nearby New York and Philadelphia. Among the seasonal visitors was President Ulysses S. Grant and during this period Long Branch became known as the ‘Summer Capital.’

Spacious, busy roads bisect large estates with private access to the beach. Landowners and notable buildings are labeled along the bottom of the sheet. The downtown area, to the right, is home to several luxurious hotels and has noticeably larger crowds along the shore. A variety of sailing craft and steamships can be seen plying the waters of the Atlantic.
