Description

Bounded (approximately) by Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Florida’s East Coast, the Bermuda Triangle is one of the world’s most enduring maritime mysteries. Dozens of ships and planes have gone down in the region under a variety of suspicious circumstances, with several of the search and rescue teams also afflicted by unfortunate circumstances.

Many of these accidents are explored within the map’s image, with vignettes and descriptive text overlaid atop a coastal chart of the Southeast Coast of North America. A poem about ‘The Triangle’ is printed in the upper right. “But if you go to sea my son and sail the oceans ’round, Don’t ever sail by Hat’ras Bight…the Devil’s private ground.”

The map was copywritten and published in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1976 by Devil’s Triangle, Ltd. Illustrations by Beverly MacDonald and Duke swim coach Bill Barton. Historical input by Captain Bill Wilkerson, who had “directed and/or participated in over 1,000 rescues in the Triangle”, according to text in the lower right.
