Securing a strategic future for America’s ocean-spanning Navy.

U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War and the resulting Pacific territorial acquisitions ensured the need for a modern, ocean-going fleet. The latest battleships, such as the Connecticut-class, carried up to 2,400 tons of high-grade coal when fully loaded – consuming roughly a commercial dump truck’s worth of fuel every hour at full steam. Because ships required specific “smokeless” steam coal to maintain performance, establishing a series of strategic coaling stations across America’s expanding empire became a top geopolitical priority.

These three maps were issued as part of a 1902 report by the Navy’s Bureau of Equipment and published within a larger Congressional volume. Two smaller sheets (approx. 12″ x 9″) pinpoint the fueling depots along America’s Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, stretching from Fisherman’s Bay to Key West and Dutch Harbor to San Diego, respectively. The largest map (approx. 23″ x 13.75″) illustrates the global coaling network made possible by recent territorial gains, highlighting key strategic outposts at San Juan, Guam, Manila, Honolulu, and Tutuila.
