Description

Published only about sixty years ago, this brochure provides an uncomfortable reality about Southern tourism during the Civil Rights Era. Promoting the ‘Natchez Pilgrimage’ of 1960, the issue provides information on the Confederate Pageant, Negro Spirituals (only $1.50 admission!) and local antebellum architecture.

An introduction by the governor is more blunt, “In Mississippi today we are experiencing a renewed awakening to those lasting values portrayed by the glorious history of a noble past. Such outstanding occasions as the Natchez Pilgrimage not only prove this fact, but offer inspiration to all Americans.”

Photographs of thirty-three historic buildings, with accompanying descriptions, are included. The brochure is accompanied by a small street plan of Natchez which identifies the location of each site, compliments of the Eola Hotel.
