Description

Though quite the drillmaster, George B. McClellan is perhaps best known (from the Civil War, at least) for his timidity in battle. Though sidelined as the commander of the Army of the Potomac (twice) during the war, ‘Little Mac’s’ career was not yet over.

He was nominated as the Democratic candidate for the New Jersey governorship in 1877, the year this cartoon was issued. It alludes to the general’s perchance for retreat during his former command, and speculates on the various avenues of retreat in the event of a loss on the campaign.

Published in the November 10, 1877 issue of Harper’s Weekly.
