Description

This rare collection of maps was prepared and produced by the Intelligence Section of Commander of Amphibious Forces, Atlantic Fleet (ComPhibLant) in 1947. They were published by members of the Map Reproduction Unit aboard the U.S.S. Taconic (ACG-17), an amphibious command ship commissioned in January 1946. Marked Restricted, the group of maps was issued to participants in a training operation on the beaches at Little Creek, Virginia (near the naval base at Norfolk).

The first page provides basic details and an overview of the contents, followed by a small-scale index plan identifying the different operational zones. Seven ‘beach sketches’ come next (lacking numbers 1 and 4), each noting depth-sounding, geographic features, and prominent structures. A sketched view of the coastline is also included for reference on approach and three pages include manuscript updates in red ink.

Unlisted in WorldCat as of April 2024.
