Description

This striking presentation of several beautiful orange and brown lilies was published in 1877 as part of John Henry Elwes’ A Monograph of the Genus Lilium. The Lilium Maximowiczi, alternatively the lesser Tiger Lily, originated in Japan and was named after Russian botanist Carl Johann Maximowicz. Variants continue to be collected, studied, and enjoyed today.

A Monograph of the Genus Lilium by Henry John Elwes, published between 1877 and 1880, is a landmark botanical work dedicated to the classification and illustration of lily species. It features 48 hand-colored plates by artist Walter Hood Fitch, showcasing lilies from Europe, Asia, and North America in remarkable detail. Elwes combined firsthand observations from his travels, especially in the Himalayas, with extensive horticultural knowledge and created a visual compendium of nearly every known species of lily under cultivation.
