Description

Long seen as “the sick man in Europe,” the Ottoman Empire had been in a  period of decline since early decades of the 19th century. Old powers die hard, and the Turks stubbornly held onto their crumbling empire for many years. Other European powers were quick to exploit these circumstances, as seen in the Crimean War and a series of conflicts in the Balkans.

This cartoon shows Marianne (representing the French Republic) holding a Greek puppet and facing off across from a German holding an Ottoman puppet. This not-so-subtle commentary shows the willingness of European powers to use local governments to further their own imperial gains.
