This intriguing collection of ephemeral documents was sent to the patent holder of the Invalid Bedstead (Patent #US431189A) by the Adamson Company of Muncie, Indiana in 1894. Issued on elaborately engraved letterhead, the transmittal to Charles Hamlin, patent owner, provides a brief summary of the Adamson Company’s advantages when selling patents, plus an incentive to halve the preliminary fee.
The pre-signed contract outlines the potential terms of sale, for which the Adamson Company will act as an agent in exchange for $36 (split to $18, according to the cover letter) and a 15% commission. Two additional printed folders provide further information about the legal responsibilities for signing the contract and a persuasive argument for doing just that. The Official Report of the Board of Examiners estimates the value of the patent at between $2,000 and $3,000.
An interesting group of material for which there is little institutional precedence. One contract, dated 1895, can be found at the Indiana State Library (Indianapolis), and there are a few contract cards noted in OCLC.
